Why have printer ink cartridges tripled in cost?

To replace ink cartridges takes one third of my monthly social security check! Really is a disgrace. (I'm selling this printer for $50). This reason why ink costs so much is actually because the cost of designing and producing the actual machines themselves. Companies like Canon make very little if any money on the machines themselves. They make all of their money on the backend or consumables side.

In March 2007 the printer companies found some stupid American judge who ruled that only Epson is allowed to make cartridges for Epson printers and only Canon can make them for Canon printers. I consider this an idiotic ruling because it is anti-American and creates monopolies. Imagine if you could only buy gas for your car from the manufacturer who sold it in cartridges at 1000% markup.Now having been handed a monopoly, they have raised cartridge prices while reducing the amount of ink inside. Printer ink now costs more than $5,000 a gallon!
