When I print something, I need to change the ink volume from more then average to less then average every single time. Less then average ink gives tip-top results, but I'm somehow being forced to spill ink. This annoys the hell out of me. Typical situation: Printing something with my HP deskjet out of Microsoft Office Word. Thanks for any help.Is there a fix for automatic overuse of printer ink?

As others have suggested, it appears to be a problem with the settings. You mention changing the volume I assume manually, but the important setting is on your computer with printing preferences which indicates the paper type i.e. paper or photo.
It might be a mechanical problem with the printer though.
go into your printer properties and change it
