My brothers year old lab-terrier mix (honestly, pit-bull, but he's a sweetheart) ate an ink cartridge the other night. He just chewed it up and apparently pooped out some ink. It's been a day, he seems ok but he's not really eating. Any advice?
Vet is 2 hour car ride away, we are not neglecting him, just looking for some advice. If you have any real info on the subject, I'd really appreciate it. Either personal info or helpful websites. How harmful is printer ink to household pets, especially dogs?
Printer and pen ink is non-toxic. Because of the fact that it can come into contact with skin on a regular basis, it has to be made of a non-toxic substance.
You can call an emergency vet to be sure, but I wouldn't worry....especially since it was the other night. At this point, there's no much they could do anyway, so as long as the dog is acting fine, no worries.
Add: Wait, did he EAT the plastic cartridge? That part would worry me. That could cause an obstruction which is an emergency. How harmful is printer ink to household pets, especially dogs?
You're best bet is probably calling the vet and asking them. They will know for sure. I think that your dog is probably really gunna be okay, and ink isn't EXTREMELY harmful, but not something to be completely overlooked, exspecially if your dog is not eating. Make sure he's drinking a lot of water though because he may need to just flush out his system. I understand the whole not wanted to have to go to the vet because of the ride, but, at least call them and ask, they will be happy to answer any and all questions and most of them (unless they're really crooked) will tell you the flat out truth okay hell be fine, or he needs to come in etc.
If you're not taking it to the vet, then I would say you should see if he will eat some moist dog food just to make sure he gets something in his stomach. Is he drinking water? And did he eat any of the plastic cartridge? That can cut up his intestines if its sharp. (not trying to scare you, just being honest) Maybe check his pee too. If you see any blood, head to the vet.
